Living History

More than a construction project, Guédelon is an exercise in experimental archaeology, bringing together historians, archaeologists, architects, and skilled craftspeople to learn how medieval buildings were actually designed and constructed. By recreating the process itself, the project continues to generate new insights into historic building methods and craftsmanship.

For those of us with a passion for traditional building, timber framing, and the history of construction, it was a fascinating and inspiring experience. Watching stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, and other artisans at work offered a deeper appreciation for the knowledge, skill, and ingenuity that shaped many of Europe’s great historic structures, which inspire builders and architects to this day.

A truly unique project and one well worth the journey.

The photos capture just a small part of this extraordinary effort to rediscover the art and craft of medieval construction.
